Purdue Defeats Valpo 5-1

Valparaiso, Ind. - Purdue scored two runs in the fourth inning and added three in the seventh to defeat Valpo 5-1. Caleb Kimmel drove in the Crusaders' lone run with a fifth-inning single.

The Boilermakers scored the game's first run in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Simon Klink and Ben Fritz. After John Hunter's single advanced Fritz to third, Brad Kriner delivered a sacrifice fly to right to increase Purdue's lead to 2-0.

Valpo (9-23-1) cut its deficit in half in the fifth when Kimmel hammered a two-out single to center, scoring Kevin Kutansky who reached as a result of being hit by a pitch.

Purdue (22-15) extended its lead to 5-0 in the seventh by plating three runs on four hits. Andy Rempel singled, stole second and third, and scored on Tyler Johnstone's single to right. Daniel Underwood hit a RBI single to right, scoring Johnstone, and Klink's single to center brought Underwood home.

The Crusaders used five pitchers as starter Justin Lata, Nick Mazzone and Sean Peickert hurled 2 innings each of shutout ball. Kyle Nelson (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs and three hits in 2 innings. Adam Paetznick pitched 1 inning, allowing three runs and four hits.

Four Purdue pitchers limited Valpo to three hits. Trae Dauby (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run and one hit, while fanning three and walking one.

Hunter had three hits and Klink and Fritz added two each for the Boilermakers.

The Crusaders play at Northwestern on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m.
