Valpo Drops Season-Opener To Ball State At Governor's Cup

Evansville, Ind. - Ball State scored 10 unanswered runs to break a 2-2 tie as the Cardinals defeated Valpo 12-2 in the season opener at the Governor's Cup in Evansville, Ind.

The Crusaders (0-1) committed six errors that led to eight unearned runs. Kyle Obenauf suffered the loss, hurling 5 innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs, while striking out three and walking one.

After BSU (1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Valpo knotted the game on Ryan Manthei's RBI single and on an error.

Ball State scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the eighth to take control. Mike Johnston earned the victory, pitching five innings.

Mike Arensdorff had two hits for Valpo, including a double.

Valpo will play the loser of the Evansville-Butler game on Saturday at 5 p.m. CST.
