13 Crusaders Earn Spring Academic All-League Honors

13 Valparaiso University student-athletes earned spots on the Horizon League Spring Academic All-League teams, as announced by the league office today.  The men’s track and field team had four honorees from the outdoor season, while the women’s squad had three honorees. Three baseball players earned Academic All-League accolades, while softball, men’s golf and men’s tennis each had one recipient apiece.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits. A total of 101 student-athletes in eight spring sports were recognized from the league’s 10 institutions.

Baseball

Josh Clark (Sr.) – A Second Team All-League honoree. Hit .338 with 50 RBIs, 14 doubles and 12 stolen bases. Slugged at a .464 clip, tying for the team lead in total bases (110). Owns a 3.64 GPA as a sports management major.

Nolan Lodden (Sr.) – A First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American and First Team All-Horizon League honoree. Hit .356 with a .451 on-base percentage. Led Crusaders in hits (83), runs (57), doubles (18) and walks (36). Owns a 3.95 GPA as an electrical engineering major. Previously earned Academic All-League accolades last season.

Dalton Lundeen (Sr.) – Earned First Team All-Horizon League honors for a second time. Went 7-4 as the Crusaders’ Friday starter during the regular season, amassing a 3.12 ERA. Closed career as Valpo’s all-time leader in innings pitched (347.1) and third in both wins (22) and strikeouts (275). Owns a 3.46 GPA as a marketing major. Previously earned Academic All-League accolades last season.

Men’s Golf

Nick Seitz (Jr.) – Earned Second Team All-League accolades for a second consecutive season. Ranked second on the team with a 74.8 scoring average, seventh-best in a single season in program history. Owns a 4.000 GPA as a biology and chemistry double major.  Previously earned Academic All-League honors last year.

Softball

Taylor Weissenhofer (Sr.) – A Second Team All-League honoree for the second time in her career. Finished regular season second within league play in both strikeouts and opponents’ batting average. Named Horizon League Pitcher of the Championship, starting all four of the Crusaders’ wins and posting a 2.47 ERA, including two shutouts, over 28.1 innings of work with 25 strikeouts. Owns a 3.478 GPA as an actuarial science major.

Men’s Tennis

Jeffrey Schorsch (Jr.) – Repeated as Horizon League Player of the Year. Broke his own school record for singles wins in a season with 29, and broke program career wins record midway through just his third season (now at 84). Spent most of spring in the doubles national rankings. Owns a 3.87 GPA as a geography major. Previously earned Academic All-League honors last season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Adam Bruno (Jr.) – Led Crusaders outdoors in the 5K (15:21.33) and ranked second on the team in the 1,500m and the 10K. Placed ninth at HL Outdoor Championships in the 5K. Owns a 3.927 GPA as a history major. Has earned Academic All-League honors on two previous occasions.

Montel Hall (So.) – Placed sixth at HL Outdoor Championships in both the long jump and the triple jump. Led Crusaders outdoors in both events, posting top marks of 22’2 ½” in the long jump and 44’0 ½” in the triple jump. Owns a 3.791 GPA as a finance major.

Elijah Owen (Sr.) – Won the javelin throw at the HL Outdoor Championships with a toss of 186’8”, third-best in program history. Also placed third at league championship meet in the decathlon. Owns a 3.849 GPA as a theology major. Previously earned Academic All-League honors on three occasions.

Christopher Sosnowski (Sr.) – Ranked second on the team in both the discus (153’2”) and hammer (178’11”) throws, moving into fourth in program history in the latter event. Placed fourth at HL Outdoor Championships in the hammer. Previous earned Academic All-League accolades three times.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Liz Bloy (Jr.) – Named Alfreeda Goff Outdoor Athlete of the Year. Led Horizon League in both the 1,500m run (4:33.41) and the 3,000m steeplechase (10:43.25). Won the 1,500m run at the HL Outdoor Championships and placed third in the steeplechase. Moved into second place in program history in both events. Owns a 3.624 GPA as a theology & ministry major. Previously earned Academic All-League honors on three occasions.

Ann Chapman (Sr.) – Led Valpo outdoors in both the long jump (17’0 ¾”) and the triple jump (34’10 ¼”). Moved into fourth in program history in the long jump and into fifth in the triple jump. Owns a 3.745 GPA as a computer engineering major.

Kim Heiny (So.) – Paced Valpo outdoors in the 5K (18:17.45) and ranked second on the team in the 1,500m run. Ranked 10th in the Horizon League during the outdoor season in the 5K. Owns a 3.890 GPA as a finance major.
