Weather Interrupts Game 1 at South Carolina
Jeremy Drudge doubled home a run to give Valpo an early lead on Friday.

The Valparaiso University baseball team was originally scheduled to take on No. 24 South Carolina on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT / 7 p.m. ET. Due to an unfavorable forecast, the start time was moved to 3 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. ET, but then the game started on a two-hour rain delay. Baseball was finally played starting at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, but then rain came again after four innings, causing the contest to be suspended. It will be resumed on Saturday afternoon in Columbia, S.C. with Valpo down 4-1.

How It Happened

  • Valpo jumped on the board first when Jeremy Drudge (Plymouth, Ind. / Plymouth) ripped a two-out double in the second to allow Patrick Donohue (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Prospect) to make his way across the plate.
  • The Gamecocks took the lead against Valpo starter pitcher Mike Kornacker (Lemont, Ill. / St. Laurence [Purdue]) in the bottom of the third, using two walks, a hitter batter, a bunt single, an error and a sac fly to manufacture two tallies without a base knock to the outfield.
  • South Carolina added two in the fourth on three hits and left the bases full. Only one of the three hits left the infield.
  • Before the fifth inning could get underway, the rain returned. The game will pick back up in the fifth inning with Valpo trailing 4-1 on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. ET.
