Shaikin Homers Twice in Series Opener at Indiana State
Sam Shaikin hit two home runs on Friday.

Senior Sam Shaikin (West Hills, Calif. / Chatsworth) continued his power surge, but the Valparaiso University baseball team dropped Friday’s series opener 13-2 at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute. The Sycamores did all of their scoring in the first two innings before securing the run-rule victory.

How It Happened

  • Shaikin picked up right where he left off after hitting a go-ahead, sixth-inning homer in Valpo’s most recent game, the series finale vs. Illinois State. The Valpo shortstop crushed a solo blast to straight-away center in the top of the first to start the scoring.
  • The Sycamores (25-7, 2-2) had a quick response as Clay Dungan led off the bottom of the first with a big fly to tie the game at one.
  • Indiana State went on to send 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs with help from three walks and two Valpo errors.
  • Indiana State added seven in the second including a three-run homer by Dungan to make it 13-1.
  • Shaikin belted his second big fly of the day in the sixth, once again a solo job to center field. Both of Shaikin’s blasts came against the talented Triston Polley, who came into the game with a 1.68 ERA.
  • Keegan Bates (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield North) and Mike Kornacker (Lemont, Ill. / St. Laurence [Purdue]) combined for four scoreless innings out of the Valpo bullpen.

Inside the Game

  • Shaikin’s long balls were his fifth and sixth of the season, moving him into the team lead. It also marked the 18th and 19th of his career. It was Shaikin’s first career multi-homer game.
  • Shaikin became the second Valpo player with a multi-homer game this season, joining Blake Billinger, who hit two on Feb. 24 at Arkansas State. Shaikin’s homers accounted for two of the team’s four hits.
  • Valpo has scored in the first inning in six of the team’s last nine games.
  • Valpo starter Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) took the loss to fall to 2-6, while Polley went all seven and got the win to up his mark to 5-0.
