Valpo Baseball Trio Recognized with MVC Scholar-Athlete Status

The Valparaiso University baseball team had a pair of repeat honorees as the Missouri Valley Conference announced its scholar-athlete teams on Thursday. Senior outfielder Steven Fitzsimmons (Golden Valley, Minn. / Robbinsdale Cooper) and senior pitcher Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) were once again named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team, while senior pitcher Easton Rhodehouse (Gilbert, Ariz. / Highland) earned MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention.


Alabama State Nips Valpo on Wednesday

The Valparaiso University baseball team was edged 4-2 by Alabama State on Wednesday night in Montgomery Alabama. The Hornets snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run triple in the sixth, a lead that would hold up on a night that featured quality pitching on both sides.


Baseball Bests Alabama State, Returns to Win Column

The Valparaiso University baseball team got back in the win column on Tuesday night, topping Alabama State 8-3 in the first of two midweek showdowns between the two teams in Montgomery, Ala. The victory came together as three Valpo hurlers combined to span the nine quality frames while three batters contributed multi-hit efforts.


Valpo Falls in Game 3 at Georgia Southern

In the final matchup of a three-game set, the Valparaiso University baseball team dropped a 12-0 decision to host Georgia Southern. Senior Steven Fitzsimmons (Golden Valley, Minn./ Robbinsdale Cooper) recorded his first extra-base hit of the year during a multi-hit game.


Turzenski Shines, Offense Stymied as Valpo Drops Game Two at GSU

The Valparaiso University baseball team faced off against Georgia Southern Saturday for the second of a three-game series. While their pitching was strong, the Brown and Gold’s offense was unable to capitalize on early opportunities, eventually dropping the contest 1-0. Freshman Trent Turzenski (Burlington, Wis./ Burlington) pitched brilliantly in relief, allowing just three hits over 6.2 innings pitched.


Valpo Drops Series Opener to Georgia Southern

The Valparaiso University baseball team dropped the series opener to Georgia Southern on Friday, falling on the short end of an 8-1 contest. Valpo’s bullpen was strong, but the team was unable to overcome an early deficit.


Baseball Visits Georgia Southern Starting Friday

The Valparaiso University baseball team will head to Statesboro, Ga. to continue its spring break trip with a three-game weekend series against Georgia Southern. Valpo recently wrapped up a stretch of seven-straight games against teams that played in NCAA Regionals last season (No. 3 Louisville, McNeese and Southern Miss) and will continue its challenging nonconference slate with the weekend set at Georgia Southern, a team coming off a win over No. 4 Georgia.


Nicholls Nips Valpo on Tuesday

The Valparaiso University baseball team fell 3-2 on Tuesday night at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. Valpo scored twice in the sixth to tie the game, but Nicholls prevailed on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth.


Baseball Drops Finale of Lake Area Classic

The Valparaiso University baseball team was again paced by Riley Dent (Long Beach, Calif. / Wilson) and Jonathan Temple (Turlock, Calif. / Turlock [Modesto JC]), who had two hits apiece in the team’s fourth and final game of the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La. on Sunday. However, host McNeese State sprinted out to a 6-0 lead over the first three innings and held on for an 8-3 triumph.

The Valparaiso University baseball team rallied for nine runs over the final three innings including a six-run eighth, but it was not enough in a 13-11 setback to Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La. Riley Dent (Long Beach, Calif. / Wilson) had three hits to lead a 15-hit onslaught, while Jonathan Temple (Turlock, Calif. / Turlock [Modesto JC]) enjoyed a four-RBI day.

The Valparaiso University baseball team received several strong pitching performances on Friday’s first day of the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La. However, the team’s annual spring break trip started with a pair of losses against quality competition as Valpo fell 5-1 to Southern Miss and 4-2 to host McNeese State, both teams that played in NCAA Regionals last season.

Baseball Bats Produce 10 Runs in Series Finale vs. Louisville

The Valparaiso University baseball team enjoyed its most successful offensive day of the season thus far, posting 10 runs on 15 hits in a 14-10 defeat at No. 3 Louisville on Sunday. It was a big day for freshman Nolan Tucker (Cedar, Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central), who spanked a home run and drove in four, the highest RBI output by a Valpo rookie in eight seasons.


Baseball Drops Game 2 at Nationally-Ranked Louisville

The Valparaiso University baseball team held a 1-0 lead as late as the fifth inning, but No. 3 Louisville gained the advantage with three in the fifth and put the game away with three more in the eighth for a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill. / South Elgin) took advantage of his first action of the season, notching two hits and driving in Valpo’s lone run of the day.


Pitching Staff Enjoys Solid Day at No. 3 Louisville

The Valparaiso University baseball team limited No. 3 Louisville to three runs on eight hits on Friday, but the offense ran into reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Reid Detmers, who struck out 14 over six shutout innings in a 3-0 win for the Cardinals at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

The Valparaiso University baseball team will continue its challenging nonconference schedule with perhaps its biggest test of the season this weekend at Louisville. The Valparaiso University baseball team garnered its first victory of the 2020 campaign by capturing the series finale on Monday afternoon at Western Kentucky, besting the host Toppers 5-3 in 10 innings at Nick Denes Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky. Senior Riley Dent (Long Beach, Calif. / Wilson) belted his first career home run, and Valpo eventually took the lead on a squeeze bunt by Damon Jorgensen (Blair, Neb. / Blair [Coffeyville]) in the top of the 10th.

Senior Riley Dent notched three hits and junior Troy Jones (Orland Park, Ill. / Carl Sandburg [Triton]) was involved in both runs as the Valparaiso University baseball team incurred a 6-2 setback in the middle game of this weekend’s season-opening series at Western Kentucky. Valpo starter Colin Fields (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) turned in a solid showing, holding the Hilltoppers scoreless through four and permitting just two runs over five innings.

Valpo Baseball to Open Season at Western Kentucky

The long winter wait is in the books and the Valparaiso University baseball team is poised to commence the 2020 campaign on Friday afternoon in Bowling Green, Ky. For the second time in the last four years, Valpo will begin the season by visiting Western Kentucky for a three-game series. This begins the annual road gauntlet that opens the Valpo season as Friday will be the first of 22 consecutive games away from home prior to the Emory G. Bauer Field opener on March 24.

With the support of two generous gifts, the project to renovate Bauer Field, Valparaiso University’s baseball field, is off to a strong start. The two gifts total $550,000 and will provide the resources to install synthetic turf on the infield and down the foul lines. The total project will be done in two phases and, when completed, will transform Bauer Field into a quality Missouri Valley Conference facility.
