Valpo Looks To Rebound Against Campbellsville

THE COACHES: Valparaiso is guided by Tom Horne, who is 53-82-1 in his 14th season at Valpo. Campbellsville is led by Ron Finley, who is 74-76-1 in his 15th season.

SERIES RECORD: First Meeting

LAST WEEK: Valpo lost to Morehead State 27-17 last Saturday in Valparaiso. Campbellsville lost to Austin Peay 45-36 last Saturday in Campbellsville, Ky.

After opening the 2002 campaign with a 27-17 loss to Morehead State, Valpo (0-1) will host Campbellsville (0-1) on Saturday at noon. The game is the first-ever between the schools.

The Crusaders received a 300-yard passing performance from David Macchi in his first start last Saturday. A junior from San Jose, Cal./West Valley College, Macchi completed 24 of 35 passes for 300 yards and one touchdown. Macchi's favorite target was junior Ryan Barno (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette), who amassed a career-high 139 receiving yards on six catches, including a 62-yard touchdown.

Campbellsville lost its home and season opener 45-36 to Austin Peay. The two teams combined for 1,005 yards in total offense as Campbellsville exploded for 545 yards, including 335 through the air.

MORE CRUSADER HIGHLIGHTS....

Bryan Hollermeier, a senior from Denver, Co./Mullen, averaged 21.3 yards per punt return against Morehead State. He amassed 85 yards on four returns, which included returns of 28, 23, 18 and 16 yards.....sophomore wide receiver Rob Giancola (Whiting, Ind./HS) made five receptions for 47 yards.....sophomore Chris Daniels (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) caught four passes for 32 yards and rushed for a seven-yard touchdown.....freshman Brad Smeja (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) caught three passes (18 yards) and returned one punt for 14 yards.....sophomore Kevin Knutson (River Falls, Wis./HS) made two receptions for 37 yards, including a 32-yarder.....sophomore Casey Liddle (Blue Springs, Mo./South) made two catches for 18 yards......freshman cornerback Kevin Schaekel (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) was involved in nine tackles and led the Crusaders with five solo stops. Schaekel and junior free safety John Tsahas (Lake Station, Ind./Edison) had two pass breakups each. Tsahas also made nine tackles.....junior middle linebacker Lawrence Canada (Mequon, Wis./Lane College) made eight tackles...freshman outside linebacker Kris Hardaway (Portage, Ind./HS) and junior strong safety Jeffrey Vlk (Downers Grove, Ill./Montini Catholic) each recorded seven stops.....freshman tackle Brad Riley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) made one sack for 11 yards......junior punter Ryan Bateman (Chester, Cal./Shasta JC) averaged 44.5 yards on two punts, including a long of 50 yards......senior kicker Adam Hudak (Lowell, Ind./HS) booted a 30-yard field goal and converted both extra point kicks.

"Valparaiso University Football", head coach Tom Horne's TV Show, airs Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. on Channel 43 in Valpo, Thursdays at 6 p.m. on Channel 44 in Portage and at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 3 in Michigan City and Merrillville. This week's player guest is sophomore defensive end Bill Marshall.

A LOOK AT CAMPBELLSVILLE:

The Fighting Tigers (0-1) are members of the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference. After compiling a 10-3 mark a year ago, Campbellsville dropped an offensive slugfest (45-36) to Austin Peay in the season opener last Saturday. Coach Ron Finley's squad features solid talent at the offensive skill positions. The offense is ignited by senior quarterback J.C. Savasuk, who passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns against APSU. He completed 22 of 38 passes and threw four interceptions. Two Fighting Tiger receivers compiled more than 100 yards in the opener. Sophomore flanker Ricky Gehres made nine receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown, while senior wide receiver Shane Riley caught six passes for 109 yards and one score. Junior tailback Derek Skaggs (66 yards, 12 carries) and senior fullback Brian Rowland (56 yards, 9 carries) lead a balanced rushing attack. Middle linebacker Josh Schindler (12 tackles) and outside linebacker Matt Quinn (9 tackles) lead the defense.
