Valpo's Macchi Named PFL Offensive Player of the Week
Monday, October 7, 2002
Quarterback David Macchi, who broke Valpo's single-game passing record for the second straight week, was selected as the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week.

A junior from San Jose, Cal./West Valley College, Macchi threw for a school-record 446 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-35 loss to Drake. He eclipsed the previous mark of 434 yards that he set Sept. 28 against Saint Joseph's. Against Drake, Macchi completed 25 of 52 passes, including touchdown strikes of 56 and 6 yards to Rob Giancola (Whiting, Ind./HS), 37 yards to Greg Sommersberger (Sheboygan, Wis./South) and 27 yards to Kevin Knutson (River Falls, Wis./HS).

The 446-yard passing performance currently ranks as the fourth-best in NCAA I-AA this season and is the third-best in PFL history. Macchi added 13 rushing yards and finished with 459 yards in total offense against Drake.

Macchi helped Giancola (six catches for 166 yards) and Sommersberger (seven catches for 116 yards) surpass the 100-yard receiving mark for the second consecutive week.
