Valparaiso University’s Greg Wood (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) was named the Pioneer Football League’s Special Teams Player of the Week following his efforts last Saturday at Morehead State.

The sophomore punter averaged 48.1 yards pick kick in nine attempts against the Eagles, including a career-long 71-yard effort on his first punt of the day.  Wood had three punts of 50 yards or more, and landed two inside the Morehead State 20 yard line.  His punting average was the best single game effort in the PFL on the season.

For the season, Wood set a new Valparaiso University and PFL record averaging 43.6 yards per punt.  He broke the old Crusader mark of 42.1 yards set by Roy Carlson back in 1953.  He also broke the PFL mark held by Shawn Wood of Butler of 43.2 yards set in 1998.

Wood’s season punting average ranks third in all of NCAA I-FCS this year.
