Valpo Falls To IUPUI In Contest Dominated By Defense

Valparaiso, Ind. - IUPUI limited Valpo to 33 percent shooting as the Jaguars defeated Valpo 63-57. The loss snapped Valpo's five-game winning streak. The Crusaders were led by Ron Howard's 22 points and nine rebounds.

Seth Colclasure netted 12 points, while Jimmie Miles added 10 points and seven rebounds for Valpo (12-12, 8-4 Mid-Con). Brandon Cole, who went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:23, led IUPUI with 20 points. Maushae Byles added 14 points, while Johnny Miller had 10 for the Jaguars.

Howard, Colclasure and Miles led a late comeback with a barrage of 3-pointers in the final 2:15. Trailing 49-34 with 2:36 left, Colclasure and Miles drained treys to trim the deficit to 49-40 with two minutes remaining. Eight of Valpo's 18 field goals occurred in the final 2:15.

After Byles and Cole converted four straight free throws to push IUPUI's lead to 13 (53-40) with 1:23 left, Howard swished two consecutive 3-pointers, the latter while being fouled on the shot. Howard added the free throw to cut the Jaguars' lead to 53-47 with 51 seconds left.

Miller scored on a fast break before Colclasure hit another 3-pointer with 43 seconds remaining. After Akeem Clark split a apir of charity tosses, Dan Oppland made a layup to bring Valpo within four (56-52) at the 29-second mark.

Cole, who topped IUPUI with 18 points in Valpo's victory over IUPUI on Feb. 3 in Indianapolis, continued his perfection at the foul line with two more free throws with 28 seconds remaining.

Howard, who has scored 21-or-more points in four of the last five games, made his fourth 3-pointer to pull Valpo within three (58-55) with 24 seconds remaining. Cole added two more free throws and Miles made a layup with 15 seconds left to produce a three-point game (60-57). Cole dropped in two more free throws with 14 seconds left and Clark added another with five seconds left for the final margin.

Neither team shot particularly well as Valpo finished shooting 33 percent overall, including 22 percent (5-23) in the first half. IUPUI (13-10, 7-5) shot 39 percent overall, but warmed up to a 48 percent clip in the second half.

Valpo finished shooting 39 percent (10-26) from 3-point range, while IUPUI made 32 percent from beyond the arc. The Crusaders converted 61 percent (11-18) of their free throws to 74 percent (17-23) for the Jaguars.

Valpo travels to play at Centenary on Monday beginning at 7:05 p.m.
