Crusaders Kick Off Final Week of Regular Season at WSU

Valparaiso (17-12, 9-5 Horizon)
Game #30 - Tuesday, Feb. 25 - 6 p.m. CT
at Wright State (16-13, 8-6 Horizon)
Nutter Center (10,449) - Dayton, Ohio

Next Up in Crusader Basketball: Securing a bye in the Horizon League Championship is what the Valparaiso men’s basketball team has its sights set on Tuesday night, as the Crusaders travel to Dayton, Ohio to face Wright State. A victory would guarantee Valpo no worse than a third-place finish in the league standings.

Last Time Out: It was tight all the way for the Valparaiso men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Crusaders never led Youngstown State by more than three points all game, but eight second-half 3-pointers, including the eventual game-winner inside the final minute from Bobby Capobianco, spurred Valpo to a 68-66 victory over the Penguins from the ARC. Alec Peters led the way for the Crusaders with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.

Head Coach Bryce Drew: Bryce Drew (65-32) is in his third season at the helm of the Valparaiso men’s basketball program in 2013-14. Over his first two-plus seasons, Drew has led the Crusaders to 65 victories, including a school-record 26 last season, as well as two Horizon League regular season titles and one tournament championship. The 2012 HL Coach of the Year, Drew ascended to the head coaching position on May 17, 2011 after spending six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach with the Crusaders.

Series Notes: Wright State owns a narrow 12-11 edge in the all-time series over Valpo, but the Crusaders have the 9-7 advantage since joining the Horizon League. In games played at Wright State, the Crusaders are just 4-7 all-time against the Raiders. Valpo had won six of the last seven meetings in the series before WSU downed the Crusaders, 62-45, at the ARC earlier this season. Jordan Coleman paced Valpo in that game with 10 points.

@ValpoBasketball...
...and the @HorizonLeague
- @ValpoBasketball has won the #HLMBB regular season title each of the last two years and claimed the tournament title last year.
- The Crusaders were picked to finish in sixth place in the league standings in 2013-14 in preseason polling.
- After having a pair of All-League honorees the last two years, Valpo was one of just two teams not to have a preseason All-League choice.

...looking back at last year
- @ValpoBasketball won its first #HLMBB tournament championship last year and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004.
- The Crusaders claimed their second straight Horizon League regular season title in 2012-13, going 13-3 in league play.
- Valpo earned a 14 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Michigan State in second round action, 65-54.
- The Crusaders set new program records for total wins (26), home wins (16) and Division I true road wins (10) last year.
- Ryan Broekhoff was a First Team All-League and All-Region honoree, while Kevin Van Wijk earned Second Team honors both places.
- Lavonte Dority was tabbed the Horizon League’s Sixth Man of the Year.

...looking ahead
- @ValpoBasketball has just one game left in the regular season following Tuesday’s contest, as it hosts Cleveland State on Saturday.

...away from home
- @ValpoBasketball is coming off a season in which it went 10-5 in true road games - the program’s first .500 season on the road since 2001-02.
- Valpo is just 5-8 in true road games so far this year, but is 4-3 on the road in Horizon League play.
- Over Bryce Drew’s three seasons, the Crusaders are 17-7 on the road in #HLMBB games.

What’s on the Line
- Tuesday’s game against Wright State is critical for seeding for the #HLMBB tournament for the Crusaders.
- A win would secure Valpo no worse than a third-place finish and at least one bye in the league tournament.
- A win Tuesday also means that with a win on Saturday, the Crusaders would earn the second seed and the double bye.
- However, with a loss Tuesday, Valpo would likely fall down to the fourth seed for the tournament.

Avenging Losses
- In Bryce Drew’s tenure, @ValpoBasketball has never suffered a season sweep against a league opponent.
- The Crusaders are 5-0 under Drew when facing an #HLMBB foe they lost to in the season’s first matchup.
- This year, Valpo defeated Oakland in the second meeting after losing the first time around.
- The Crusaders have two games this week against teams they lost to the first time around - Wright State and Cleveland State

Block Party
- Thanks to the prowess of Moussa Gueye and Vashil Fernandez, @ValpoBasketball has set a program record for blocked shots in a season.
- The Crusaders broke the previous record at Green Bay and now own 153 blocks on the season.
- Both Fernandez (at UIC) and Gueye (Oakland) have matched the program’s single-game blocks record of 7 in the past few weeks.
- Gueye has blocked 60 shots this year, good for second in the Horizon League and already third on Valpo’s single-season chart.
- Gueye became just the second player in program history to block 60+ shots in a season, joining Raitis Grafs, who did it twice.
- Fernandez is third in the league in blocks and eighth on Valpo’s single-season chart with 50 rejections.
- Fernandez and Gueye are the first duo in program history to both block at least 50 shots in the same season.

Going Advanced
- @ValpoBasketball ranks among the top-91 teams in the nation in three out of the offensive “four factors” in advanced stats.
- The Crusaders rank 51st in FT rate (46.5), 80th in effective FG pct. (51.6%) and 91st in offensive rebounding pct. (33.9%).
- However, Valpo is 338th in turnover pct. (22.4%) and defensively ranks 329th in forced turnover pct. (15.5%).
- Individually, Moussa Gueye ranks eighth nationally in offensive rebounding pct. (16.5%), while both Gueye (12th) and Vashil Fernandez (53rd) rank among the best in block pct.

Drew Gets New Contract, Sees Jersey Retired
- @ValpoBasketball announced in December that it had reached an agreement with Bryce Drew on a new, 10-year contract.
- The deal would keep Drew as the Crusaders’ head coach through the 2022-23 campaign.
- Drew is one of just three coaches in #HLMBB history to win regular season titles in each of their first two seasons as a head coach.
- Drew currently sits as the fourth-winningest coach in #HLMBB history in terms of career winning percentage as well.
- Then, in late January, the #24 jersey became the first in Crusader history to be retired, in honor of both Drew and Bruce Lindner.

Mixing and Matching Lineups
- @ValpoBasketball has started six different lineups this year.
- The Crusaders have used a starting lineup of Fernandez, Adekoya, Peters, Dority and Williams in each of the last 11 games.
- 10 of the 12 players on the Crusaders’ roster have started at least one game this season, including four of five freshmen.
- Dority and Peters have started all 29 games to date for Valpo.
- This year’s roster had just five combined starts in a Crusader uniform entering the season - Dority (4) and Capobianco (1).

Freshmen Getting Minutes
- Valpo’s five freshmen have combined for 42.1% of the Crusaders’ total minutes played so far this season.
- Three of the five (Jubril Adekoya, Alec Peters, Lexus Williams) have played every game and are averaging at least 19 mpg, while Clay Yeo is averaging 13.1 mpg in 24 games.

- @ValpoBasketball has ranked among the top-5 in the nation in 2-point pct. each of the last 3 years, hitting above 55% all 3 years.

- Valpo is shooting at a 52.7% clip from inside the arc this season.

Reloading This Year
- @ValpoBasketball entered this season with eight newcomers after losing seven players, including six seniors, from last year’s team.
- In all, only 22.8% of the scoring, 27.3% of the rebounding and 24.2% of the minutes played from last year’s squad returned in 2013-14.
- Only four players on this year’s roster played for the Crusaders prior to this season, and all played just last year at Valpo.
- The 8 newcomers include 5 freshmen and 3 transfers - one eligible immediately, one eligible after sitting out and one who became eligible in Dec.
- This marks the first time in the last three seasons that the Crusaders have had a true freshman play for them.

In the Crusaders’ Future...
- Valpo inked a pair of Canadian guards to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
- Max Joseph and Tevonn Walker are currently teammates at Vanier College in the St. Laurent borough of Montreal, Quebec.

@WSURaiders
- Wright State enters Tuesday’s game at 16-13 overall and 8-6 in #HLMBB play, one game back of the Crusaders.
- The Raiders have won three of their last four games, including a 65-61 win over Detroit last time out.
- The defensively-minded Raiders only score 67.3 ppg, but exhibit a balanced attack, as six different players average at least 7 ppg.
