Chicago, Ill. - J.J. Redick scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the first half and three other Blue Devils netted double-figures as 10th-ranked Duke defeated Valpo 93-61 at Chicago's United Center. Dan Oppland led the Crusaders with 21 points.

Jimmie Miles added 17 for Valpo (0-4), including 12 in the second half. DeMarcus Nelson tallied 17 points for the Blue Devils (5-0), while Shelden Williams added 16 points and seven rebounds. Daniel Ewing had 14 points and dished out six assists.

After a 10-10 tie five minutes into the game, Duke went on a 38-16 run to take a 48-26 halftime lead. Redick scored 16 points during the run, including two 3-pointers, while Williams added eight points - six at the start of the scoring stretch.

Oppland, who scored seven early points to keep Valpo close, netted 12 points in the first half and nine in the final 20 minutes. The 6'8" junior was 2-for-2 from 3-point range and tied Williams with a game-high seven boards.

After Oppland and Kenny Harris converted layups to cut Valpo's deficit to 18 (48-30) at the beginning of the second half, the Blue Devils went on a 32-14 run to extend their advantage to 80-44 with 7:17 remaining. Redick scored seven and Williams added six during the decisive game-clinching run.

Miles, a sophomore, scored 10 points in the final 6:47. Jarryd Loyd, who, for the second straight game started at point guard for injured senior Ali Berdiel, delivered a game-high seven assists. A freshman, Loyd had nine assists in the Crusaders' previous game against Charlotte.

Turnovers hurt Valpo as the Crusaders committed 18 in the first half and had 21 overall. Duke had 16 miscues. The Blue Devils held a 56-32 advantage in points in the paint.

Duke shot 66 percent (36-55) overall, including 47 percent (7-15) from 3-point territory. Valpo finished shooting 41 percent (21-51) overall, making 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Valpo made 16 of 24 free throws (67 percent) to Duke's 14 of 21 (67 percent).

The game, which drew 10,070 fans, was the second for Valpo at the United Center as the Crusaders were edged by Notre Dame 55-53 in January, 2003. Duke is now 6-0 all-time at the UC.

Valpo travels to play Indiana State Thursday at 7:05 CT (8:05 ET).
