Monday, November 6, 2006
Shawn Huff (Helsinki, Finland/Makelanrinne) registered a double-double Monday night and led four Crusaders in double-figures as Valparaiso cruised to a 91-48 victory over Trinity Christian in the final exhibition game for the Crusaders.

Huff poured in 20 points for the Crusaders, leading all scorers, and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. He also added four assists without any turnovers.

Joining Huff in double figures was freshman Samuel Haanpaa (Kerava, Finland/Cornerstone [Texas] Christian), who recorded 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Jarryd Loyd (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) added 14 points and five rebounds, while Urule Igbavboa (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds. It was Igbavboa's second straight exhibition game with at least 10 points after reaching the mark just once during his freshman campaign.

Valparaiso trailed two minutes into the game at 5-4, but used a 17-3 run over the next 4:14 to jump ahead 21-8. The lead would fluctuate between nine and 15 points for most of the remainder of the first half before the Crusaders utilized a quick 9-2 spurt right before the half to go into the locker room up 43-26.

The Trolls put the first two points on the board in the second half to cut the deficit to 15, but that was as close as Trinity Christian would get. Valpo held the Trolls to just four points over the next 8:14 while putting up 22 points to extend the lead to 65-32 with 11:04 to play to cement the game. Every Crusader player who dressed scored at least three points, and nine of the ten Valpo players saw the floor for at least 10 minutes of action.

Ross Stuursma led the Trolls with 17 points in 28 minutes. Ty DeWitte posted a double-double in the first half on his way to 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Valpo shot 50% from the field for the second straight game, hitting 31-of-62 shots, while holding Trinity Christian to just 28.1% shooting (16-of-57). The Crusaders out-rebounded the Trolls, 43-38, while holding a 17-6 edge in assists. Trinity Christian committed 22 turnovers to 11 for the Crusaders, who tallied 13 steals and enjoyed a 28-6 edge in points off turnovers. Valpo also held significant advantages in points in the paint (48-24) and fast break points (20-0).

The victory closes out Valparaiso's exhibition season at 2-0. The regular season is slated to begin Saturday night as the Crusaders host Calumet at the Athletics-Recreation Center. The jump is set for 7:05 p.m., and all the action can be heard live on the Valpo Sports Radio Network and online at www.valpo.edu/athletics.
