Valpo to Face Detroit to Open Horizon League Championship

The Valparaiso men’s basketball team, which finished tied for fourth in the Horizon League regular season with a 10-8 record, earned the sixth seed for the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship and will open play at the ARC on Tuesday evening against seventh-seeded Detroit at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Valpo-Detroit game will move on to face the winner of Green Bay (third seed) and Youngstown State (tenth seed) on Friday evening at 5 p.m. CST in Indianapolis, Ind.  That winner takes on second-seeded Wright State in Indianapolis at 4:15 p.m. CST on Saturday, March 6, while the championship game will be played Tuesday, March 9 at 8 p.m. CST at the highest remaining seed.

Valparaiso (15-16, 10-8 Horizon) and Detroit (18-13, 9-9 Horizon) split their two regular season matchups, with each team winning on its home court.  The Titans won the meeting in Detroit on January 8, 77-67, while the Crusaders captured the game at the ARC on Feb. 6, 74-70.

Tuesday’s game, as always, will be broadcast live on the Valpo Sports Radio Network (WEFM, 95.9 FM, Michigan City; WAKE, 1500 AM, Valparaiso; WLPR, 89.1 FM, Lowell) and can be seen on the Horizon League Network.  Valpo’s athletic website, www.valpoathletics.com, will have links for live audio, video and statistics.
