Former Valparaiso men’s basketball player and Fort Wayne Mad Ants guard Ron Howard etched his name into the NBA D-League record books on Saturday night, as he became the D-League’s all-time leading scorer.
Howard, known affectionately as ‘Mr. Mad Ant’ for his ties with the Fort Wayne community over his seven-year career playing for the Mad Ants, surpassed Renaldo Major’s record of 4,252 points by knocking down a deep jumper while being fouled early in the third quarter of Fort Wayne’s win Saturday night over Springfield. Howard ended the night with 20 points and now sits at 4,261 points for his NBDL career.
Howard played for the Crusaders from 2003 through 2006, twice earning All Mid-Continent Conference accolades. He caught on with the Mad Ants following an open tryout prior to the 2007-08 campaign and has averaged in double figures in each season with Fort Wayne. This season, Howard is just shy of his career high, averaging 20.5 points per game, good for ninth in the D-League.
