Valpo Welcomes Ranked Rhode Island Squad to ARC Tuesday
Head coach Matt Lottich leads the Crusaders into battle versus Rhode Island Tuesday.

Valparaiso (6-1, 0-0 Horizon)
Game #8 - Tuesday, Nov. 29 - 7 p.m.
#21/25 Rhode Island (5-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
Athletics-Recreation Center (5,000) - Valparaiso, Ind.

Next Up in Crusader Basketball: The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team welcomes its first nationally-ranked opponent to the ARC in nearly six years on Tuesday evening, as #21/25 Rhode Island comes to town to take on the Crusaders. Valpo, which defeated the Rams in a thriller last season in Rhode Island, would match its best eight-game start in the last 70 years with a win on Tuesday.

Last Time Out: Thievery was the order of the day for the Valparaiso University men’s basketball team on Sunday, as the Crusaders approached a program record by tallying 17 steals in a 79-73 victory over Ball State at the ARC. Senior Alec Peters led four Crusader players in double figures with a game-high 23 points, while junior Lexus Williams led the defensive effort with six steals.

Head Coach Matt Lottich: Matt Lottich is in his first season at the helm of the Valparaiso University men’s basketball program in 2016-17 after being named the 22nd head coach in program history on April 7. Lottich previously served as an assistant coach for the last three seasons, helping Valpo earn 78 victories - including a school-record 30 last season - and a pair of Horizon League regular season titles.

Series Notes: Valpo holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series with Rhode Island, but the Rams claimed the win in the most meaningful matchup - a 74-68 URI victory in the Sweet Sixteen of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Last season saw Valpo earn a 58-55 win at Rhode Island as part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. The Crusaders were led by 14 points from Alec Peters, while Keith Carter, Tevonn Walker and Vashil Fernandez finished with 12 points apiece.

- The last visit from a ranked opponent came Dec. 7, 2010, as #19/18 Purdue downed the Crusaders 76-58.
- That visit was meant to be a homecoming for Valpo H.S. alums Robbie Hummel and Scott Martin, but Hummel was out with a season-ending injury and Martin had transferred out the previous offseason.
- The last visit from a nationally-ranked opponent from outside the state of Indiana came on Nov. 27, 2006, as #8/9 Marquette escaped with a narrow 65-62 victory.

Rematches From Last Season
- Tuesday’s matchup with Rhode Island is the fourth of seven non-league games the Crusaders will have against opponents they played last season.
- Valpo has already rematched with Oregon, Ball State and BYU from last year’s schedule, avenging last season’s loss to BSU and beating BYU both years.

- Nine out of Valpo’s last 12 victories over opponents out of the power-5 conferences have come on neutral courts.

Double-Figure Wins
- Valpo won each of its first three games of the season by double figures, a feat not accomplished by a Crusader squad in nearly 50 years.

Comeback Victories

- Meanwhile, Alec Peters attempted 29 shots versus the Trolls - the most by a Crusader in at least 22 years.

- Williams picked up six steals against the Cardinals, tied for fourth-most in a game by a single player.

What’s Back
