Valparaiso’s men’s golf team sits in a tie for 10th place after the first 36 holes of the Skyhawk Classic hosted by Tennessee-Martin.  The Crusaders turned in rounds of 299 and 295 to post a 594 total on the 6,685-yard, par-72 Paris Landings Golf Course in Buchanan, Tenn.

“All in all we played decent today,” head coach Mike Higdon said.  “We couldn’t get anything going with birdies though.”

Kyle Henning (Brookfield, Wis./East H.S.) led the way for the Crusaders in both rounds, carding a 74 in the opening round before posting an even par 72 in the second round.  The 146 total puts the freshman in a tie for 28th place heading into the final round.

Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence H.S.), playing in just his second event of the fall, posted rounds  of 76 and 73 to finish second overall for the Crusaders at 149.  Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger H.S.) also shot 73  in round two after carding a 77 in the first round and sits at 150.

Thomas Wettstein (Neenah, Wis./Xavier H.S.) added a 75 in his first round before shooting 77 in round two, and is at 152 while Brad Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward H.S.) posted 156.  He tied for the team’s low opening round at 74, but followed it up with an 82.

Valparaiso is tied with Lipscomb and Tennessee-Martin’s “B” team heading into Tuesday’s final round, and is just one shot behind ninth place Jackson State.  Central Arkansas leads the way at 18-under par 558.

“Putting hurt us today,” Higdon added.  “I don’t know if it’s the Bermuda greens or what.  The greens and course are in great shape.  Hopefully we can get that going tomorrow and we can shoot low.”

Individually, Central Arkansas’ Steven Lecuyer holds a one shot lead at six-under par 136 (72-66).

Tuesday’s final 18-hole round begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
