Crusader Men Kick Off Spring Campaign

The Valparaiso men’s golf team opened up the 2014 spring season on Monday with 36 holes at the Bash at the Beach Collegiate Invite in Myrtle Beach, S.C., finishing the day in a tie for eighth place.

“I was very pleased with our performance in the tournament today, since it had been five months since our last competition of the fall,” said Crusader head coach David Gring.  “I felt the ball striking was very solid, as well as our guys’ short game and course management on a challenging golf course.”

Valpo posted rounds of 291 and 296 on Monday at The Surf Golf & Beach Club to finish the first two rounds of the 54-hole event in a tie for eighth place out of 16 competing teams with a score of 587.  The Crusaders, who are tied with Greensboro, sit just three shots out of sixth position, while Radford leads the team standings with a score of 562.

Senior Kyle Henning (Brookfield, Wis./East) led the Crusaders on Monday, ending the day in a tie for ninth place in the 96-golfer field after rounds of 69 and 73 left him at even-par 142 with 18 holes remaining.  Freshman Nick Seitz (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) sits in a tie for 38th position at 147, shooting rounds of 71 and 76 on Monday.

“Kyle Henning was very balanced with his game today, striking the ball well and making lots of putts – finishing with six birdies and an eagle,” said Gring.  “He is looking forward to tomorrow’s round and finishing well in the top of the field.”

Freshman Peter Webb (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) and redshirt sophomore Jared Magoline (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac [Marquette]) both posted scores of 149 to enter Tuesday tied for 47th place, as Webb went 75-74 and Magoline recorded rounds of 76-73.  Playing as an individual, junior Joe Harris (Washington, Iowa/Washington) is tied for 85th at 162, while junior Eric Winters (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) is one shot back in 88th position.

“Coming off of the long winter, the guys were excited to compete today in a talented field with teams which we don’t see very often,” said Gring.  “This was an excellent confidence booster to start our spring 2014 season.”

Valparaiso closes out the tournament with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
