Henning, Magoline Post Second-Place Finish at WSGA Bestball Championship

Valparaiso graduated senior Kyle Henning and junior-to-be Jared Magoline teamed up at the 2014 Wisconsin State Golf Association (WSGA) Bestball Championship last weekend, turning in a second-place finish in a field of 111 pairings.

Henning and Magoline easily advanced through the initial cut down to 32 pairings, posting matching rounds of 69 in two rounds of stroke play to finish tied for 12th out of the 111 teams.  Seeded 13th in the match play bracket, Henning and Magoline – playing out of South Hills G&CC in Fond du Lac – earned a come-from-behind win in the first round of match play, rallying from down three holes with eight to play and taking the lead for the first time on the 17th hole as they won 1-up.

The duo’s second round victory came much easier, as Henning and Magoline shot a 5-under-par round in a 5&4 win to advance to the quarterfinals.  The pair then shot matching 4-under rounds in both the quarterfinals and semifinals, earning wins by final scores of 3&2 (quarters) and 2&1 (semis) to advance to the championship match against Michael Burcin and Robbie Ziegler – the head and assistant coach of the Wisconsin men’s golf team.

Neither pair led by more than one hole throughout the match, and a birdie by Henning and Magoline on the 17th hole squared up the contest, which would remain all square through the regulation 18 holes.  Burcin and Ziegler would eventually win the match on the second playoff hole, however.
