Crusader Men’s Golf Battles Cold in Dayton
Peter Webb led the Crusaders on day one of the Wright State Invitational.

The Valparaiso University men’s golf team braved the cold as it took the course at the Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Ohio for the Wright State Invitational on Monday.

The Crusaders sent nearly their entire squad to Dayton, split into two teams for scoring purposes. The Brown team finished the day in sixth place, shooting a team score of 622 through the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament. The Gold team currently sits in eighth place with a team score of 642. Dayton leads the field through two rounds after shooting a 36-hole team score of 571.

Leading the Brown team, finding himself near the top of the pack after day one was junior Peter Webb (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial). Webb sits in sixth place with a two-round score of 146 (+4), only four strokes off the overall leader. Webb finished round one with a 74 (+3), and followed that up with a two-stroke improvement in round two, shooting a 72 (+1).

Senior Jared Magoline (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac [Marquette]) finds himself tied for 16th overall after posting a 151. Sophomore Michael Doherty (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) placed third for the Crusaders’ Brown squad, closing the day in a tie for 43rd with a 36-hole score of 163.

Placing fourth for the Brown team through two rounds was sophomore Zach Cutler (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland), who shot a 165 over 36 holes, while just one stroke behind Cutler was senior Matt Ward (Plainfield, Ill./South), who ended day one with a 166.

Leading the Gold squad was freshman Mitchell Whittman (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), who shot a 154 on Monday to finish the day in 22nd place. Redshirt sophomore Adam Baracani (Normal, Ill./University) and senior Michael Holevas (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward Central Catholic) matched each other in both rounds, shooting back-to-back 81s to finished tied for thirty-ninth overall at 162.

Junior Ryan Heck (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) shot matching rounds of 84 for a combined score of 168 after day one, and rounding out the Gold team’s score was Michael Kinsella (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North), who finished the day at 172.
