Xavier Blanks Crusaders 2-0

Xavier scored twice in the final 18 minutes of the match to defeat Valparaiso 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

After a scoreless opening half in which the Crusaders outshot the visitors 8-5, Tiest Sondaal took advantage of a free kick from 25 yards out and beat Jeff Oleck (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) in the top right corner to give the Musketeers a 1-0 lead at the 73:31 mark.

Steven Barten added an insurance goal with 1:05 to play after taking a pass from Andy Farrell on a two-on-one and scoring between the goalkeeper’s legs.

Xavier (3-2) outshot Valpo 13-11 for the match while the Crusaders held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Oleck made four saves for the Brown and Gold while Brian Schaeper made five for the Musketeers.

Valparaiso will return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to East Lansing, Mich. to battle Michigan State in a 1 p.m. CDT match.
