Valpo Scores Shutout Victory over Canisius

Sean McGinnis (Barrington, Ill./Barrington H.S.) notched his first career shutout and Valparaiso scored twice in the second half as the Crusaders defeated Canisius 2-0 on Sunday morning at the Bulls Classic in Buffalo, N.Y.

McGinnis recorded three saves in the blanking, helping lead Valpo to its first victory of the season.

D.J. Catrow (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central H.S.) tallied the first goal of the match at the 68:23 mark, scoring in the bottom right of the goal after going one-on-one with goalkeeper Matt Houghton for his second goal of the season.

Jon Brighton (Warner Robins, Ga./Houston County H.S.) added the insurance goal in the 87th minutes, taking a Jeremy Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central H.S.) cross from the left and finding the lower left portion of the net.

Valpo outshot the Golden Griffins 15-6 for the match and held a 9-3 advantage on net. Houghton made seven saves for Canisius (0-1-1).

Catrow, Paul Leitelt (Munster, Ind./Munster H.S.), and Chris Goss (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Valparaiso (1-1) will head to Indianapolis on Friday afternoon for a 4 p.m. match against the Butler Bulldogs.
