Crusaders Duel to Scoreless Draw With Cleveland State

Valparaiso picked up a point in Horizon League play on Saturday night, as the Crusaders and Cleveland State played to a scoreless double-overtime draw at Brown Field.

An evenly matched first half saw the Crusaders take five shots to Cleveland State's four. Neither side had a shot on goal until the closing minutes, when the Vikings' Aaron Adkins earned a 1-v-1 opportunity with Crusader goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West). Zobeck stopped Adkins' initial effort from close range, and while unable to corral the ball following the save, was in position to stop another shot from Adkins as well. Valpo got a header on frame in the waning seconds, but that was saved by CSU netminder Brad Stuver as the game was scoreless into the half.

Valpo controlled much of the play in the second half, out-shooting the Vikings 9-2 and earning a trio of corner kick opportunities. But a number of the Crusader efforts were blocked by CSU defenders and both goalkeepers had to make just one save to keep the game scoreless into extra time. Zobeck made three saves in the first overtime period to preserve the clean sheet, while Valpo had one shot on goal in the second overtime which was saved by Stuver.

The Crusaders ended the night with a 17-9 advantage in shots, but the Vikings put six on goal to Valpo's three. Zobeck made six saves for his third shutout of the year, while Stuver stopped three shots to earn the shutout for Cleveland State (6-5-2, 1-1-1 Horizon). The physical battle saw the two sides combine for 49 fouls.

Valparaiso (1-6-5, 0-1-3 Horizon) steps out of league play as it hosts Northern Illinois at Brown Field on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on WVUR, 95.1 FM, Valparaiso and online at www.valpoathletics.com, which will also have a link for live stats.
