Valparaiso University junior Rafael Mentzingen (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil / Bryan) was honored on Sunday as the Missouri Valley Conference announced its 2017 men’s soccer all-tournament team.
Mentzingen scored the first goal of a wild second half between Valpo and Drake that saw the two teams combine for six goals after both squads had clean sheets at halftime. Words can’t do Mentzingen’s goal justice, as the Valpo junior received national attention after beating seemingly the entire Drake roster single-handily before finishing from 15 yards out.
The all-tournament recognition helps tie a bow on Mentzingen’s successful first season as a Crusader, which also earned him first-team all-conference accolades.
The junior transfer shared the team lead with nine goals, which ranks tied for seventh in program history for goals in a single season. He totaled 57 shots and placed 25 on goal, both team watermarks. Mentzingen, who accumulated 19 points, scored a pair of game-winning goals, the only Crusader with multiple match-winners this season.
