Crusaders Open Dual Season Drowning IUPUI

Valparaiso's men's swimming and diving team opened its dual meet season on Friday evening with a 113-91 victory over IUPUI at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.

Freshman David Peterson (Schererville, Ind./Highland H.S.) won a pair of individual events and also was on the winning 400 medley relay. The rookie took home top honors in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.81. He also cruised to first place in the 200 individual medley by nearly three and a half seconds in a time of 2:02.67. Finally, he swam the second leg of the victorious 400 medley relay.

The 400 medley relay of Travers Smith (Huntley, Ill./Huntley H.S.), Peterson, Bob Pedersen (Urbana, Ill./Urbana H.S.), and Sean Conrin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove H.S.) opened the meet with a victory by .14 seconds in a time of 1:41.07.

Bob Schmidt (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville H.S.) then won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:48.56, while Smith took home first place in the 100 back in a time of 54.14 seconds. Conrin also took home an individual first in the 100 butterfly in 56.16 seconds.

Valpo (1-0) will return to the pool on Saturday when the Crusaders compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships held in West Lafayette, Ind. in a meet hosted by Purdue. The meet will begin at noon.
