Valpo Closes Out Action at Coers Invitational

Valparaiso wrapped up its first two-day meet of the season on Saturday afternoon finishing in fifth place at the Coers Invitational held at the Lewellan Aquatic Center in Muncie, Ind.

The Crusaders tallied 184 points over the two days, just three behind fourth place Findlay.  Grand Valley State won the meet with 753.5 points, outdistancing meet host Ball State (553.5).  Lewis was third with 248 points.

Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard H.S.) placed third for the Brown and Gold in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.39, less than a second-and-a-half off  of the lead pace.  Trevor Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./Connersville H.S.) also posted a top-10 finish in the event, placing ninth with a time of 1:03.83.

Wegehaupt also added a third place effort in the 200 breast with his time of 2:14.81. 

Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West H.S.) finished seventh in the 100 freeestyle.  The freshman touched the wall in 50.52 seconds.

Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton H.S.) added an eighth place effort in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 57.94 seconds.  He also had the team’s best time in the 200 back, finishing 14th with a time of 2:06.07.

Kevin Fedde (Fort Collins, Colo./Heritage Christian H.S.) and Steve Booth (Saint Joseph, Mich./Saint Joseph H.S.) finished eighth and ninth respectively in the mile, the first time the event has been contested this season.  Fedde posted a time of 18:22.82 while Booth finished in 18:37.99.

Ian Jones (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington H.S.) finished ninth in the 200 butterfly with his time of 2:19.11, while teammate Thomas Patrick (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) placed 10th in the same event.  Jones also posted the team’s best time in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 58.48 seconds, placing 12th

Fernando Aguilar (San Salvador, El Salvador/Colegio Internactional de San Salvador H.S.) finished 13th for the Crusaders in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.23.

The Crusaders finished the meet with a fourth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.  Wegehaupt, Braun, Fedde, and Russell Deghi (Sebestopol, Calif./Analy H.S.) posted a time of 3:21.59.  Valpo finished fifth in the other two relays.  Deghi, Trimpe, Wegehaupt, and Aguilar had a time of 1:44.36 in the 200 medley relay while Braun, Trimpe, Aguilar, and Booth turned in a time of 7:45.58 in the 800 free relay.

Valparaiso will return to action Dec. 1-3 at the Calvin Invitational.  Thursday night’s action begins at 5 p.m. CST in Grand Rapids, Mich.
