Valpo Returns to the Pool with Split Decision
The Crusaders returned to the pool Saturday at the ARC.

The Valparaiso swimming teams returned to the pool Saturday in a dual meet against Rose-Hulman. The women defeated the Fightin’ Engineers 193-58, while the men lost 181.5-80.5.

Freshman Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep [Fla.] had a pair of first place titles, winning the women’s 200 yard freestyle (1:59.37) and setting the third fastest Crusader time in the 100 yard butterfly (58.75). She also swam the opening leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay that finished in first (3:50.25).

Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) swept the men’s breaststroke titles, finishing in 59.22 in the 100 yard, the only competitor to finish under a minute, and 2:13.78 in the 200. He also finished third in the 50 yard freestyle (22.59) and swam the second leg on the second place 400 yard freestyle relay.

Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) and Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) all finished the day with a two individual titles. Law won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:12.56) and 500 yard freestyle (5:28.85), while swimming the second leg of the 200 yard medley relay that took home third place (2:00.50). Segatto took home the hardware in the 200 yard butterfly (2:15.90) and 200 yard IM (2:19.47), while finishing second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:16.19). She also swam the third leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay that won in 1:56.57. McBride swept the 50 (26.19) and 100 yard freestyle (57.12) and swam the third leg of the winning 400 yard freestyle relay (3:50.25).

Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.) took home first place in the 200 yard backstroke (2:02.57) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (54.62).

Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) finished second in the 200 yard butterfly (1:58.15) and 100 yard butterfly (53.84), while finishing third in the 100 yard freestyle (49.22). He also swam the opening leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay that took second place (3:18.31).

The Crusaders return to action next Friday, Jan. 16, when they host Horizon League rival Green Bay at the ARC pool. Start time is set for 3:00 pm CT.
