Crusader Swimming Teams Take on Saginaw Valley State
Fred Jenny set the 6th-fastest mark in program history in the 100 free Saturday.

The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams continued their 2015-16 season Saturday afternoon, traveling up north to University Center, Mich. for a dual meet with Saginaw Valley State University. The Crusader men posted four marks among the top-10 in Valpo history during the meet.

The Valpo men fell by a final score of 161-124 to Saginaw Valley State, while the women suffered a 223-59 defeat.

Senior Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Oxford) led off Valpo’s 400 free relay squad, while fellow senior Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) anchored the team. Senior Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn./North) and freshman Colten Lawson (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) swam the middle two legs as the Crusaders won the event with a time of  3:11.51, the eighth-fastest time in program history.

Both Jenny and Castro Diaz posted career-best times in the 100 free as well, as the pair touched the wall 1-2 in the 100 free. Jenny’s time of 47.50 was the sixth-fastest all-time at Valpo, while Castro Diaz’s time of 47.58 ranks eighth. Both men also earned another individual event win as well, as Jenny took the 50 free in 21.67 and Castro Diaz claimed first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.95.

Freshman Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) staked his claim to fourth place in the Crusader record book in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.67, good for second place on Saturday, while also winning the 500 free with a time of 4:56.13. Mitchell teamed up with sophomore Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) to claim the top two spots in the 100 backstroke as well.

On the women’s side, a pair of swimmers earned two second-place finishes each. Junior Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) brought in 11 points for the Crusader women, placing second in the 1000 yard free (11:15.48) and the 200 IM (2:20.29) and adding a third-place finish 200 backstroke (2:35.42). Sophomore Paiton Krebs (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) claimed second place in both the 200 butterfly (2:22.03) and the 500 free (5:26.65).

Valparaiso travels down to Terre Haute, Ind. on Thursday to take part in a dual meet against Rose-Hulman. The first event is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start.
