Adams/Roller Win at Ball State Invitational, Adams Still Alive in Singles Play

Jay Adams (Detroit, Mich./Andover H.S.) turned in a terrific performance for Valparaiso on Saturday at the Ball State Fall Invitational, advancing to the semifinals of the consolation draw in the D Flight in singles, while also winning the consolation draw in the D Flight of doubles with Evan Roller (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem H.S.) held in Muncie, Ind.

Adams defeated Joe Harvath of IUPUI in the quarterfinals of singles action 6-4, 6-4 to set up a meeting with Alex Roby of Bradley in Sunday's semifinals. He also teamed with Roller for an 8-5 victory over Xavier (Ohio) in the semifinals in doubles action. The duo then won the championship match over IUPUI 8-6.

In other doubles action on Saturday, Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) and Jeff Vrabel (Allen Park, Mich./St. Francis Cabrini H.S.) won their first match of the day in the A Flight consolation draw 9-8 (6) over Xavier before falling to a team from Northern Illinois 9-7.

In singles play, Vrabel, who had advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship draw in the C Flight, fell 6-0, 6-0 to Butler's Evan West. Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) split a pair of matches in the consolation draw of the B Flight, downing Creighton Macy of Marquette before falling 6-2, 6-3 against Justin Kates of Western Michigan.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
