Valpo Sweeps Cleveland State

Valparaiso closed out the dual match portion of its fall schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of Cleveland State at Brown Courts.

The Crusaders opened winning all three doubles matches. Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) and Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) were 8-6 winners at the top spot, while Shabbi Kahn (Karachi, Pakistan/Oasys H.S.) and Dave Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) notched an 8-4 win at the second spot. Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Blain Keller (Muncie, Ind./Delta H.S.) cruised at third doubles 8-0.

In singles play, Dunham-Freer was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner at number one, while Kooyers needed a super tie-break to win 6-7 (3), 6-2, 10-6 at the second spot. Kahn registered a 6-4, 6-1 win at third singles, while Bukowski was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victor at the fourth spot. Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North H.S.) posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at the fifth spot, while Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) rounded out the line-up with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.

Valparaiso will return to the courts on Saturday for an exhibition match against the alumni beginning at 10 a.m.
