Crusaders Fall in Windy City Finals

Valparaiso had a pair of individuals playing for titles on Sunday afternoon at the Windy City Classic in Chicago, but came each one came up unsuccessful.

In the A Flight of singles, Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) fell to Brenton Bacon of Ferris State 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. In the consolation finals, Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) suffered the same fate, losing 6-1, 6-4.

Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) also was playing for the championship on Sunday in the D Flight. He pushed Toni Todoric of Chicago State to three sets before falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Valpo also played doubles against Chicago State, where the Crusaders fell two matches to one. Kooyers and Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) recorded the Brown and Gold's lone win, 8-5, at the top spot.

Valparaiso will host an exhibition match next Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. against Crusader alumni as part of Homecoming festivities at the university.
