Valpo Shuts Out Wagner to Earn Season's First Victory

Valparaiso yielded just five games total to Wagner on Monday morning as the Crusaders earned their first victory of the 2006 spring season with a 7-0 shutout over the Seahawks in Kissimmee, Fla. to kick off the annual spring trip.

Valpo took control beginning in doubles play. The top team of Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) and Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) posted an 8-1 triumph over Steve Johnsen and Adam Amster. The Crusaders also won at second doubles by the same score as Dave Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) downed Brandon Segluzzio and Scott Chamberlin.

In singles play the Crusaders allowed just Wagner (0-1) to win three games, recording eight love sets in five matches. Valpo won sixth singles by default. Kooyers was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at the top of the order against Johnsen while Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) and Wagner each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories over Amster and Segluzzio respectively at second and third singles. Shideler posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the fourth spot against Chamberlin and Bukowski won at fifth singles 6-0, 6-0 against Will Shuler.

Valparaiso (1-6) will return to the courts on Tuesday morning to face Fairleigh-Dickinson beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST.
