Valparaiso’s men’s tennis team wrapped up the 2010 season in triumphant fashion on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Chicago State 6-1 at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
“It’s nice to get a win to finish the year on a positive note,” head coach Jim Daugherty said.
The Crusaders wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard, winning the doubles point. Having already claimed third doubles due to a default, Carlton Lyons (South Bend, Ind./Clay H.S.) and Michael Woodson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft H.S.) posted an 8-1 victory at the second spot against Jerrick Boone and Michael Chew to secure the point. Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) and Arne Deihle (Reutlingen, Germany/Johannes Kepler H.S.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over Mehmet Duru and Ivan Mojsejev at the top spot.
In singles, the Crusaders won the sixth spot by default, making it 2-0 early. Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) downed Tyler Turner 6-0, 6-0 at number five singles while Litscher, the lone senior on the roster, closed his career downing Chew by the same score at the fourth spot to secure the match. Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) also cruised 6-0, 6-0 against Boone at number three while Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) defeated Mojsejev 7-5, 6-4 at the top of the order. Chicago State (0-11) earned its lone point at number two singles as Duru defeated Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Valparaiso closes its year 5-13 overall and was 2-5 in the Horizon League.
