Valpo Shuts Out Chicago State

Valparaiso’s men’s tennis team won its second straight match while posting its third win in its last four contests overall on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout over Chicago State in Chicago, Ill.

The Crusaders opened the match by sweeping doubles.  Winning the third spot by default, Jose Gaspar (Sao Paulo, Brazil/CEAD H.S.) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) clinched the opening point with an 8-0 victory over Viet Lam and Dave Regus at the second spot.  Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) and Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) added an 8-6 win at the top spot against Ankil Chopra and Armaan Choudhary.

Valparaiso won all five contested singles matches in straight sets over Chicago State (0-17).  Baum was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Chopra at the top while Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) defeated Choudhary 7-5, 6-1 at number two singles.  Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) added a 6-0, 6-2 win against Lam at third singles while Stump posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at four against Regus.  Michael Woodson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft H.S.) defeated Michael Chew by the same score at fifth singles and the Crusaders won at the sixth spot by default.

Valparaiso (8-11) will close out the home portion of the 2010-2011 season on Wednesday afternoon entertaining IUPUI beginning at 3 p.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex.  The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 5 but was postponed due to travel conditions.
