Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) was named Men's Tennis Player of the Week by the Horizon League Tuesday.  It's the junior's first award of the year and the second of his career.

"Eric has had a great season and has been our most consistent performer all year long," head coach Jim Daugherty said in reaction to the news.

The #1 singles player all season dispatched Nebraska-Omaha's Conner Tieszen handily 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday.

Honert followed up with another straight set victory Sunday defeating Mike Basha of Detroit 6-4, 6-4 for his first Horizon League win of the season.

With this past Sunday's win, Honert has won seven of his last ten matches dating back to February 23rd.  He carries a season record of 18-13.

Along with fifth-year senior Chris Baum, Honert has taken on a leadership role within a team that is youth-heavy, evidenced by a roster of six freshmen.  His tutelage has garnered the respect of both the newcomers and the coaching staff.

"Eric has really stepped up this spring and has pulled out key victories over and over when the team really needs him," assistant coach Michael Woodson remarked.

Honert and Valparaiso return to the courts Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio.  The time of the match has yet to be announced.
