Valparaiso men's tennis freshman Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and volleyball senior Ellen Vanden Berg (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) have been named the Valparaiso athletic department's Athletes of the Month for the month of October.

Schorsch posted Valpo's top singles performance ever at the ITA Midwest Regionals, advancing out of the qualifying draw with straight-set wins over opponents from Illinois State, UIC and Toledo. After dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision to Ohio State's Marko Goles-Babic in the first round of the main draw, Schorsch closed the event with a 6-0, 5-7, 12-10 victory in consolation action against DePaul's Paul John.

Vanden Berg helped lead the Crusader volleyball team as Valpo went 9-1 in the month of October, in the process reaching the 20-win milestone for the 12th straight season. The senior made her presence felt defensively at the net over the course of the month, averaging 1.49 blocks/set. She posted a season-best 10 blocks in Valpo's win at Cleveland State, one of six straight matches she registered at least five rejections.
