For the third time in four weeks, the Horizon League's men's tennis player of the week is a Valparaiso Crusader.
The league announced freshman Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) as the latest recipient of the honor Tuesday morning.
Bacalla went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and also recorded a win at No. 1 doubles alongside sophomore Daniel Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North). He defeated Creighton's Elliott Baker 6-2, 6-3 in singles play on Wednesday before rallying back on Thursday to overthrow Quinnipiac's Eric Ambrosio 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to complete Valpo's 6-0 spring trip in Orlando, Florida.
Bacalla and Oakes downed Ambrosio/Luke Roser 8-6 in doubles action on Thursday. The duo was ahead 6-5 on Creighton's Billy Paluch/Jake Norman on Wednesday when the match was halted because the Crusaders had clinched the doubles point.
Bacalla's singles record now sits at 18-5. His 18 wins are tied for the fifth-most ever by a Crusader in a single season. In doubles play, Bacalla and Oakes are 9-2 at the No. 1 spot. Overall, the freshman has been a part of 15 doubles victories.
Valpo (13-3) begins Horizon League play this Saturday at 2 pm when it welcomes UIC (3-5) to the Courts of NWI.
