Eagles Fly by Valpo Men
Friday, March 7, 2003
The Valparaiso University men's tennis team opened up its spring trip on Friday morning falling to Boston College 7-0 in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Eagles began the match making short work of all three doubles contests. Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) and Jeff Vrabel (Allen Park, Mich./St. Francis Cabrini H.S.) kept Boston College the closest at first doubles but fell 8-3. The Eagles won the other doubles matches 8-2 and 8-1.

Valpo made things interesting in several of the singles matches though. Dunham-Freer took his opponent the distance before falling in a super tie-break 10-8. The sophomore won the first set 7-5 before dropping set two 6-2.

Jay Adams (Detroit, Mich./Andover H.S.) also made things interesting at sixth singles. The junior was blanked 6-0 in the first set but rebounded for a 7-5 victory in the second. However, Adams, like Vrabel, fell 10-8 in the super tie-break.

Boston College won the other four singles matches in straight sets. Chris Widmeyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller H.S.) played the tightest match of the four at number four singles, but fell 6-4, 7-5.

The Crusaders (0-5) will continue on their spring trip Monday afternoon when the Brown and Gold travel to Stetson for a 1:30 p.m. CST match.
