                Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) earned a pair of singles victories on Saturday afternoon at the Valpo Fall Classic to claim the consolation championship of the A singles flight in the event held at the Valpo Tennis complex.

                Lau started the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Diego Cerzosimo of Youngstown State.  He then captured the crown with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 win over Mark Goldin of Green Bay in the championship match.

                Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) dropped his consolation semifinal 6-4, 6-3 against  Goldin in the semifinals in his bid to play Lau in the title match.  Phidias Fortune (San Antonio, Texas/New Braunfels H.S.) also dropped a super tie-break for the third set in C singles against Justin Collins of IPFW, falling by the score of 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.

                In the A flight of doubles, Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Wagner won their opening match in the consolation draw 8-5 against IPFW before falling in the back draw championship 8-2 against a duo from Youngstown State.

                Fortune and Danny Lewallen (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley H.S.) won a thriller in the consolation semifinals of the C flight by a 9-8 score winning the tie-break 7-5 against IPFW.  The tandem then dropped the consolation draw championship match 8-4 against another Mastodon pair.  In the same draw, Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) finished in fourth place after falling 8-6 in a pair of contests.

                Lau and Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) finished in fourth place in the B flight.  The pair fell 9-7 in the semifinals against Green Bay and also dropped an 8-0 decision against IPFW.

                “I see improvement overall from last weekend,” Valparaiso head coach Jim Daugherty said.  “We got off to a good start today, but I would like to see a stronger performance with their final matches.”

                Valparaiso will host its annual Alumni Tournament next Saturday afternoon at the Valpo Tennis Complex.  First serve is set for 2 p.m.
