Valparaiso University’s Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Player of the Week after going 4-0 in singles action and 3-1 in doubles play last week in Florida.
Honert helped guide the Crusaders to a 3-1 record last week to wrap up their annual spring trip. On Monday, the sophomore won a pair of matches at number two singles, defeating NJIT 6-2, 6-0 as part of Valpo’s 4-3 victory before downing Franklin & Marshall 6-4, 6-0 as part of the team’s 5-2 win. On Tuesday, Honert was a 6-2, 6-2 winner in the team’s victory over Indianapolis before downing Colgate on Wednesday in the finale of the trip 6-4, 7-5.
Honert also teamed with Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) for doubles victories against NJIT, Franklin & Marshall, and Indianapolis.
On the season Honert is now 15-5 overall with a 9-2 singles mark this spring. He leads the team in victories.
Valparaiso (6-5) will open Horizon League action on Saturday afternoon with first serve slated for 2 p.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
