Day Two of Purdue Invitational in the Books
Sophomore Michael Savaglio advanced to the semifinals in the Flight D bracket Saturday at the Purdue Invitational.

Freshman Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) battled DePaul's David Vieyra in their tight second round match, a tilt that ended Vieyra's way 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Vieyra earned All-American status last year in doubles.

Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) suffered his first collegiate loss of his career - ending a 4-0 start - when he dropped his second round match to Green Bay's Howard Scott 6-3, 6-1. 

Xavier's Michael Moe stopped Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Springs) in his run to become Valpo's winningest singles player with a 6-4, 6-3 result.

Kyle Dunn (Fon du Lac, Wis./Fon du Lac) earned a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets victory over Xavier's Freddy Abunku before Louisville's Amaury Demgnat got the best of him in their consolation match in a narrow 6-3, 7-5 contest.

Sophomore Michael Baiocchi (Naperville, Ill/Neuqua Valley) was on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-2 match with Louisville's Felipe Frias. Baiocchi was victorious earler in the day with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Xavier's Rob Torsch.

Fellow sophomore Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) advanced to the semifinals in the Flight D portion of the Purdue Invitational with wins over IUPUI's Jacob Hedderig 6-2, 6-2 before eliminating Case Western Reserve's Phil Gruber 6-1, 6-2. 

Meanwhile, sophomore Lucas Waak (Maniotowoc, Wis./Roncalli) moved on to the finals in the Flight E draw with a three-set win over University of Chicago's Krish Ravalla 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Waak advanced to the finals via an injury defeat over Case Western Reserve's James Fojtasek.

Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) won his consolation match against Vincennes' Chris Holcomb 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Bacalla and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) blanked Butler's Sam O'Neill and Pulok Bhattacharya 8-0 before falling 8-4 to Purdue's tandem of Silva and Mendinillia in the Flight A consolation bracket.

Schorsch and Honert went toe-to-toe with Butler's Brandon Woods and Billy Weldon in the Flight A consolation. The Bulldogs escaped with a 9-8 (12-10) win.

Cleveland State's Jorg Van der Vloet and Matt Ford prevailed 8-3 over Dunn and Baiocchi in the Flight B bracket.

Waak and Danny Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) downed Purdue's team of Dages and Bouggy 8-3 in the consolation side before the mixed group of Iowa's Juan Estenssoro and Marquette's Kristiyan Trukov defeated the Valpo pair 8-2.

Savaglio and Hickey dropped an 8-3 tilt to Case Western Reserve's Phil Gruber and Fojtasek.

Play continues Sunday in the final day of the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette.
