Valparaiso Fall Invitational Closes with More Crusader Wins
Junior Brian Hickey is riding a four-match winning streak after an undefeated weekend at the Valparaiso Fall Invitational.

Men's tennis closed out the Valparaiso Fall Invitational on Saturday with another barrage of wins in both singles and doubles play. Overall, the Crusaders enjoyed a 39-1 weekend in singles and a perfect 15-0 mark in doubles.

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) polished off an undefeated run in Group A singles. Schorsch defeated Chicago State's Mario Noboa 6-3, 6-0, and then Cardinal Stritch's Florian Fresse, 6-1, 6-1. Bacalla beat Chicago State's Sergiu Muresan 6-3, 7-5 before downing Fresse, 6-4, 6-2.

Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) enjoyed similar success in Group B singles. Emhardt picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win over Julian Chavez of Chicago State in the early match. Emhardt improved his personal record to 9-1 following a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cardinal Stritch's Caio Barros. Savaglio recorded a 6-1, 7-6 (4) triumph over Chavez and followed it up with a 6-0, 6-2 win versus Jimmy Le of Cardinal Stritch.

Group C singles saw freshman Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) boost his record to 9-2. Gardner handed Chicago State's Chris Gonzalez a 6-4, 6-3 loss before defeating Cardinal Stritch's Abel da Costa 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) won his first match over Gonzalez 6-2, 6-3. Dunn suffered the only loss by a Crusader this weekend when he fell to Cardinal Stritch's Raymond Weich in three sets. Reich prevailed 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. 

Junior Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rashley Yeremia in Group D singles. Waak later downed Cardinal Stritch's Nader Murad, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) beat Yeremia 6-4, 6-1 in their 2 pm match before Hamilton picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Donnerrson Penna of Cardinal Stritch.

Daniel Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) made quick work of Western Illinois' Jacob Sanders in their 6-1, 6-0 match in Group E singles. Oakes finished off the weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Cardinal Stritch's Stuart Nett. Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) blanked Sanders, 6-0, 6-0 before registering a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cardinal Stritch's Alef Guimaraes. 

In doubles play, Schorsch/Emhardt toppled Weich/Barros 8-4 in Group A doubles. The Crusader tandem later defeated Noboa/Muresan 8-2. Elsewhere in Group A doubles action, Bacalla/Hamilton breezed past Muresan/Noboa 8-1, and then beat Haertel/Adams 8-3.

Dunn/Oakes tallied an 8-3 victory over Penna/Guimaraes before collecting an 8-3 win over Chavez/Gonzalez. Waak and Savaglio won an 8-4 contest versus Chavez/Gonzalez before tagging Le/Freese with an 8-4 loss. 

In Group C doubles, Gardner/Hickey defeated Bunch/Sawhney 8-2 before blanking Yeremia/Ulloa 8-0 to close out a fantastic tournament for the Brown and Gold.

Valparaiso will now have a dozen days off to prepare for the ITA Regionals held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Play begins Thursday, October 16th in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The ITA Regionals represent the final event on the fall calendar.
