Junior Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) defeated Western Michigan's Jefta Kecic, 6-2, 6-3, in the Flight A singles final of the Vredevelt Invitational on Saturday. With the victory, Schorsch, the 119th-ranked player in the nation, advanced to 6-0 in singles on the young fall season.

Classmate Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North)'s bid for a Flight B title came up short as he fell 6-1, 6-0, to WMU's Matt Hamilton in the final. Elsewhere in Flight B, freshman Chad Kissell (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) scored an impressive 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Howard Scott, Green Bay's projected No. 2 singles player.

Illinois State's Christopher Greve dealt Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) a 6-4, 6-3 defeat in the final of Flight C. Senior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) captured third place in Flight E in a cliffhanger. Savaglio outwore Iowa's Tony Leto, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7. On the other side of the bracket, freshman Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) beat Green Bay's Miles McDowall, 6-3, 6-2, for the consolation title.

Senior Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) prevailed 6-4, 6-0 versus Matej Kostadinov of Green Bay in the third place match in Flight F.

The Crusaders piled up four wins in doubles action Saturday.

In a matchup of nationally-ranked tandems, Schorsch/Emhardt opened doubles play with a 6-4 victory over Michigan State's Mac Roy/Michael Dube in the semifinals of Flight A. Schorsch and Emhardt were upset, though, 7-5 in the final against Western Michigan's Jefta Kecic/Stephen Payne.

Roy and Dube exacted their revenge on Valpo, defeating Bacalla and Danny Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) in the third-place round of Flight A, 6-3. Bacalla and Oakes fell 6-1 in the semifinals opposite Kecic/Payne.

Kissell and Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) took WMU's Maik Steiner/Matt Hamilton to the brink, but ultimately fell 7-5 in the semis of Flight B. Iowa's Jonas Larsen/Nils Hillestrand then doubled up the Crusader duo, 6-3, in the third-place match.

Savaglio and Waak were victorious in both of their doubles matches on the left side of the Flight C doubles bracket. The two surrendered just one game in their 6-1 rout over Svjetlicic/Jimmy Beckwith from WMU before taking the consolation title with a 6-4 triumph versus Green Bay's Charlie Ridout/Rowan Isaaks.
