The Valpo men's tennis team continued its run of supremacy Sunday morning at the Titan Tennis Courts in Detroit, Michigan. The Crusaders defeated the host Titans 6-1 to boost their overall record to 18-5 including a 4-0 mark in Horizon League play.
#85 Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) did what they do best: winning atop doubles play. The junior pair downed Patryk Koscielski/Nathan Ponton, 6-3, for their 24th doubles victory of the season. Chad Kissell (Latrobe, Pa/Greater Latrobe) and Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) clinched the opening tally with a 7-5 triumph versus Griffin Mertz/Kacper Stelmaszak at No. 3 doubles. Valpo has claimed the doubles seven times in its last eight contests.
The Crusaders registered lopsided wins at No. 1-5 singles.
Schorsch handed Koscielski a 6-3, 6-0 defeat at No. 1. Gardner's 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zychowicz at No. 4 ballooned Valpo's lead to 3-0.
In his first match at No. 2 singles since Feb. 20th, Kissell secured the team win by virtue of his 6-1, 6-4 victory against Ponton. Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) shook a four-match slide with a resounding 6-2, 6-4 triumph versus Kadyrov at No. 3.
Dunn won his fifth straight singles match, dispatching Stelmaszak at No. 5 by a score of 6-0, 6-3. UDM's Griffin Mertz salvaged a point for the Titans at No. 6 as he got past Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7.
Sunday represented Valpo (18-5, 4-0 Horizon)'s final road tilt of the 2015-16 campaign. The Crusaders will close out the regular season next weekend at the Valpo Tennis Complex. Youngstown State (6-12, 2-2 Horizon) and Cleveland State (11-10, 1-3 Horizon) will come to town Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both matches will get underway at 2:00 pm CT.
