Valpo Men’s, Women’s Doubles Teams Win Horizon League Weekly Awards

The Valparaiso University tennis programs swept the weekly Horizon League doubles awards, as the league office announced on Tuesday that Valpo tandems captured Doubles Team of the Week honors for both men’s and women’s.

The top Crusader women’s doubles pair of Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind. / Silver Creek) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind. / Munster) repeated as Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week after earning the same distinction a week ago. Before last week, the Crusaders hadn’t achieved a weekly award on the women’s side since February 2015, but now they’ve earned one back-to-back weeks.

Hebble and Heuer continued their strong start to the spring season by taking down IUPUI’s No. 1 doubles team of Samantha Mayer and Sara Sherif 6-4 at the Courts of NWI on Friday. They’ve now won back-to-back matches, own a 10-6 overall record and stand at 4-2 in dual play. As a team, the Crusaders played their best match of the season against the Jaguars but came up short, 4-3.

The Valpo men’s team recently tweaked its doubles alignment, as Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind.  / Carmel) and Chad Kissell (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) were recognized as the Horizon League Doubles Team of the week after only their second match together. They helped Valpo start Horizon League play on a high note by beating UIC’s Niko Wasilewicz and Christian San Andres at No. 2 in the team’s 7-0 victory over the Flames.

Emhardt has now won three weekly awards this season, while Kissell notches his first weekly honor since March 8, 2016.

The Valpo women host Akron on Saturday, March 4 before traveling to Bradley on Sunday, March 5. The Crusader men carry a six-game winning streak into their spring trip, which begins on Saturday, March 5 in Orlando, Fla. against Rollins College.
