Perfect Week Helps Ancona Win Summit League Honor

After helping lift the Valparaiso University men’s tennis team to a flawless 4-0 spring break trip, junior Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) was named the Summit League Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Ancona had an unbeaten week in both singles and doubles to help Valpo improve its season record to 10-3. He leads the team in singles victories and is already only four wins away from cracking the Top 10 in program history for victories in a single season. He owns an impressive 19-4 singles record and is 16-5 in doubles play.

Only a junior, Ancona has already made his way into the Top 10 in program history in career singles wins with 57, which is tied for ninth. He also reached a double milestone this week, picking up his 50th career victory. Ancona rolled to his first “double bagel” triumph of the season, the second of his career and the second by any Valpo player this season on Thursday with his 6-0, 6-0 win.

Ancona has won nine straight singles matches. His three-set win on Wednesday came over a player who was All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team in 2015-16 and All-Sunshine State Conference honorable mention last season.

Valpo will be back in action on Saturday, March 23 by hosting Butler at 2 p.m.
