Daugherty Welcomes Kalenic to Valpo Men’s Tennis Program

Valparaiso University head men’s tennis coach Jim Daugherty has announced the addition of Andrej Kalenic (Belgrade, Serbia / Kreativno Pero), who joins the program as a freshman for the 2019-2020 season.

Kalenic, who has been playing tennis since age 12, was touted as one of the best in his country under 18. He was in the Top 10 under 18 and was in the Top 20 as a senior. He owns victories over players with Universal Tennis Ratings (UTRs) of 11 and 12.

“Andrej is a great addition for our team,” Daugherty said. “He suffered an injury last year, which did not do his rankings justice, but he is recovered and stronger than ever. He is a team player who will be a positive influence on our team dynamic. We look forward to welcoming Andrej into our Valpo tennis family.”

Kalenic said he selected Valpo because he believes it’s a great place to improve his academic and athletic career. He intends to study in business.

Kalenic, who has won regional tournaments in his country, has three sisters – Marija, Darija and Isidora. His father Dejan is a dentist and his mother Jelena is a photographer.

Kalenic joins Philipp Leithold (Esslingen, Germany / Theodor-Huess Gymnasium) and Oscar Mendoza (Guayaquil, Ecuador / Interamerican Academy) to make up a three-member freshman class for the 2019-2020 season. The team has a unique blend of youth and experience with five seniors and three freshmen comprising the roster.
