Valparaiso sophomore Julian Smith (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) has been named the Horizon League Male Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 100m dash for the fifth time in as many meets during the 2012 outdoor season.

Smith took top honors last Saturday at the Purdue Open, covering the 100m in 11.01 seconds despite running into a headwind.  The sophomore, who leads the Horizon League this season with the league’s fastest times in both the 100m and 200m dashes, has now won the 100m dash in all five of Valpo’s meets during the outdoor campaign and has now won at least one event in eight consecutive meets dating back to the indoor season.  In addition, he is ranked 41st in the NCAA East Region and 71st nationwide in the 100m dash with his top time this season of 10.46 seconds.
