Kharun Receives Award Nomination from NCAA

Monday, April 03, 2006

Valparaiso graduate assistant Iryna Kharun is up for consideration as one of two Most Outstanding Student-Athletes of the past 25 years in women's track and field as the NCAA celebrates 25 years of women's championships.

Kharun competed earlier this decade for Indiana. While with the Hoosiers, Kharun captured the 2003 NCAA Division I national championship in the javelin throw. Her toss of 202'10" set a new NCAA championship record. She was a 2004 Olympic qualifier and also a former Ukranian national record holder in the javelin throw.

The NCAA has nominated 41 student-athletes from the past 25 years for the two awards. A full list of nominees can be found at http://www.ncaasports.com/track-and-field/fanpolls. To be considered for nomination, an athlete must have captured at least three NCAA championships in outdoor track and field and/or must currently hold a NCAA championship record.
