Crusaders Place Fourth at Phoenix Invitational

Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) and Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) each registered individual event victories for Valparaiso Saturday at the Phoenix Invitational in Chicago, Ill., helping the Crusaders to a fourth-place team finish.

Valpo tallied 80 points on the meet for its fourth place finish.  The host University of Chicago totaled 167 points for the team victory.

Bartholomew won the weight throw for the second time in as many meets this year, registering a toss of 56’4 ¾”, over five feet longer than the runner-up.  Honig was the front end of a 1-2 finish for the Crusaders in the 3,000m run, crossing the line in 8:44.99, the fifth-fastest time in school history in the event.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) followed Honig in as the second-place finisher, completing the race in 8:46.18.

Three other Crusaders also recorded top-five finishes on the track.  Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) placed third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.34.  Rich Krupar III (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) finished the one mile run in 4:32.64, good for a fourth-place showing, while Bryan Gill (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) finished fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:02.17.

On the infield, Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) placed second in the shot put, recording a mark of 44’8 ¾”.  Freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) tallied two top-five finishes in the jumps, leaping 43’3 ¾” in the triple jump and 20’3” in the long jump to finish third and fourth, respectively.

Valparaiso returns to the track next weekend at the Findlay Classic in Findlay, Ohio.  Events start Friday, January 25 at 10 a.m. CST and continue Saturday at 7 a.m.
